I was walking through a spice market, and I couldn’t read a single sign.
Not even enough to guess. The letters meant nothing to me, the names didn’t translate, and even if they had, I’m not sure it would have helped. Everything was laid out in front of me—piles of powders, dried things, seeds, blends—but none of it came with anything I could easily recognise.
At first, I tried.
I would smell something and immediately look for a name. Try to match it to something I already knew. Cinnamon? No. Something warmer. Closer, but not quite. Then something sharper underneath it. Then something else entirely.
It didn’t work.
There was too much.
Every few steps, it changed again. Something smoky, then something sweet, then something dry and almost bitter. None of it stayed long enough to pin down properly before something else replaced it.
And at some point, I stopped trying.
I stopped looking for labels, stopped trying to work out what each thing was or what it was “meant” to do.
I just walked through it.
And that’s when it actually landed.
Not as a list of scents I could name, but as something my body was responding to without needing to explain it first. Some things felt grounding, some felt lighter, some I didn’t like at all—but I knew that immediately, without needing to understand why.
That’s the part most people override.
Because we’re used to needing to identify things before we trust our response to them. To name something, categorise it, decide what it is before we let ourselves feel anything about it.
But scent doesn’t work like that.
Your body responds before your mind catches up.
You don’t need to interpret it to experience it.
So the next time you come across a scent you don’t recognise, don’t rush to figure it out.
Don’t immediately try to name it or decide what it’s “for”.
Just pause for a moment.
Take a normal breath.
Then another, slightly slower one.
Notice what happens on its own.
Whether your body softens slightly, whether your attention shifts, whether you instinctively like it or don’t.
That response is already accurate.
You don’t need to explain it to use it.
You can just let it be what it is.
That’s enough.
