Part of the Alchemy of Calm collection

Chanel No. 5 is iconic for a reason.

A blend of aldehydes, it doesn’t smell like anything else in quite the same way. It’s been written about, analysed, turned into something almost symbolic over time—made even more famous by the moment Marilyn Monroe said it was all she wore to bed.

For most people, it’s something you recognise.

For me, it’s something I feel first.

My mother has worn it for as long as I can remember. It’s threaded through everything—being held before she left for dinner, my first day of school, my last, my graduation. It’s familiar in a way that doesn’t need explaining.

But the part that’s interesting isn’t the memory.

It’s the moment just before it.

Because whenever I smell it now—on someone passing, in a room, somewhere I’m not expecting—it happens the same way.

There’s a split second where something in me shifts.

Not a thought.

Not a memory.

Just a feeling—something softening, something recognising, something landing before I’ve had time to work out why.

And then my mind catches up.

That’s Chanel No. 5.

That reminds me of her.

But by then, the shift has already happened.

That’s how scent works.

Your body responds before your mind labels the experience. Before you identify it, before you decide what it means, something has already changed.

Most people miss that moment.

They move straight to the recognition. To naming it, explaining it, placing it somewhere familiar.

But the useful part is just before that.

So the next time you smell something—anything—pay attention to the very first second.

Right after you inhale.

Before you think what is that?

Stay there.

Even briefly.

Notice what’s already happened. Whether your body softened slightly, whether your breathing changed, whether your attention shifted before you had a reason for it.

You don’t need to hold it for long.

Just long enough to catch it.

That’s where the shift is.

And it happens before you ever have to think about it.

To stay with this month’s rose more deeply, the July 2026 – The Vital Rose Workbook is waiting for you here – a quiet companion of prompts, rituals, and reflective practices to help you soften into the theme at your own pace.
