Part of the Pages of Light collection
You don’t always notice it as holding back.
It feels more like smoothing something over. Choosing the easier version of what you meant. Letting a sentence end a little earlier than it wanted to. Shrinking something instinctively, before anyone else has the chance to respond to it.
It’s often subtle.
A softened opinion.
A quieter desire.
A version of you that fits the moment more neatly than the truer one would.
You don’t always question it.
It happens quickly, almost before you’ve fully heard yourself.
At some point—usually in a quieter moment—you feel it.
Not regret exactly. Just a slight sense that something was held in place. That there was more there, and it didn’t quite get to move.
You reach for your phone.
Open a note.
And write, without overthinking:
If I stopped holding back…
The first line might feel obvious. Or a little performative. That’s fine.
Keep going.
Let the sentences come a little faster than feels comfortable. Let them be slightly unedited. Slightly more direct than you would usually allow.
There’s often a point where something shifts.
The tone changes.
The writing becomes less careful.
And something more honest begins to appear—not louder, not dramatic, just less contained.
You don’t need to act on any of it.
You don’t need to turn it into a plan.
Because often the holding back isn’t just in what you do.
It’s in what you don’t let yourself fully admit.
Stay with it for another line or two.
Let it unfold without managing it.
And notice the feeling afterwards.
Not necessarily confidence.
Just a little more space.
As though something in you has been allowed to stand at its full height, even if only on the page.
Sometimes that’s where it begins.
To stay with this month’s rose more deeply, the October 2026 – The Shadow Rose Workbook is waiting for you here – a quiet companion of prompts, rituals, and reflective practices to help you soften into the theme at your own pace.
